Eight Cuban Boxers Clinch Berth to Central American Games
HAVANA, Cuba, May 7 (acn) Cuba reached eight berths through men who will seek silver medal today in Tijuana, Mexico, at the qualifying boxing tournament for the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico.
The Cuban victories in quarter-finals were achieved by the light heavyweight world champion Julio Cesar La Cruz by technical knockout against Panamanian Melanio Flores .
The cruiserweight Erislandy Savon also knock out the host Brandon Olvera and light welterweight Yasnier Toledo, double world runner up, beat 3-0 Nicaraguan Hasan Rigby.
Cuba's only loss of the day went to flyweight Gerardo Cervantes, who was beaten 1-2 by Puerto Rican Jeyvier Cintron, world youth runner-up.
A note from the Cuban delegation states that Cervantes could also qualify for Veracruz 2014 if Cintron defeats the Dominican Gerardo Valdes in semifinals.
