The incident occurred when a truck carrying passengers hit another truck with a trailer carrying a pipe that was parked in that place.

Jorge Lazaro Alvarez, a member of the Provincial Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba, told reporters that after the collision, the injured persons were taken to local Cinco de Septiembre Polyclinic, where they received first aid.

Afterwards, doctors arranged for the patients, according to their gravity, to be transferred to the Abel Santamaría surgical hospital of westernmost Pinar del Rio province, where they are now treated.

The people that died in the accident were Midialys Alfonso, Librada Lara Gutiérrez, Lázaro Raúl López González, José Arteaga, José Manuel Pérez Valdés, Pedro Núñez Benítez, and Elier Rodríguez González.

At the time of writing this information, from the total number of injured people, nine were reported as in bad conditions and several major surgeries were performed on them.

Osmany Correa, the hospital director, said that patients are receiving good medical care and the families are kept informed every 20 minutes on the evolution of the wounded.

The competent authorities are investigating the causes of the unfortunate incident.
