Fire at Gas Station Injures 32 in Santiago de Cuba
HAVANA,
Cuba, Aug 29 (acn) The rapid and effective action of the
fire department and the support of the population of the
city of Santiago de Cuba allowed the early termination
of a major fire that erupted at a gas station in eastern
Santiago de Cuba, some 800 kilometers east of Havana.
The
incident
occurred
when a
truck
collided
against
one of
the gas
pumps,
causing
the
spill
and the
rapid
expansion
of the
liquid
around
the
place.
Even
when
fire-fighters
tried to
control
the
situation
urgently,
experts
agree
that
among a
group of
people
located
near the
site of
the
accident
caused a
spark
that
ignited
the
spilled
fuel and
the fire
spread
to the
tanks,
causing
the
explosion.
The fire
was put
out when
it was
threatenning
to
spread
due to
the
volatility
of the
fuel and
leaks
and
return
lines
were
isolated.
The top
authorities
of the
Communist
Party
and the
Government
presented
themselves
in the
accident
site to
see the
works
underway
there,
and then
went
they to
the Juan
Bruno
Zayas
hospital,
where 32
injured
were
hospitalized,
14 of
them in
danger
for
their
life.
These
patients
are seen
by
specialists
qualified
for this
type of
injury
and have
the
resources
available
for
their
care.
The
experts
and
other
specialists
from the
Ministry
of
Interior
work in
clarifying
the
events
that
contributed
to this
unfortunate
accident.
