A report by PL radio service said that the European mission,
made up of eight diplomats from Germany, Spain, France and
Poland, will pay a two-day visit to Paraguay to meet with
members of political parties, legislators, representatives
of social and business sectors, in an effort to assess the
social situation in the country with the objective of
drawing up a report to be submitted to the European
Parliament.
The visit takes place amidst increasing protests demanding
the reinstatement of Fernando Lugo as president of Paraguay.
The visitors will also find many empty diplomatic missions
after their ambassadors left Asuncion upon their
government’s decision not to recognize the regime headed by
Federico Franco.
This mission was preceded by a group of leftist European
legislators headed by Spanish Willy Meyer, who also leads
the current delegation.
On that occasion, the delegation issued a public document
signed by 30 European
parliamentarians condemning the ousting of Fernando Lugo.
The declaration described the action against Lugo as a coup
and went on to denounce the illegal nature of the so-called
parliamentary trial against the Paraguayan head of state.
