Penny Palfrey Attempts Crossing of Florida Straits
HAVANA, Cuba,
June 29 (ACN) British-Australian swimmer Penny Palfrey launched into
the 90-mile crossing of the Florida Straits on Friday after telling
reporters that her initiative is a symbolic effort tying friendship
links between the Cuban and the US people. If she makes it, the
crossing will add a new record to her life as a swimmer.
Palfrey is making her crossing
between Cuban and the Florida Keys
protected by a special electronic system against sharks, which
pose the
biggest threat in the straits, and she will be escorted by team
of
doctors, pilots and weather experts.
The protection system scares sharks away without hurting them,
said the
swimmer who noted that they have always protected the
environment. The hot
Caribbean sun and the strong Golf current are another two
challenges
facing Palfrey, who will turn 50 years old in July.
The renowned swimmer previously set a 108-kilometer solitary
swimming
record after crossing shark-infected ocean waters between to
isles in the
Cayman Islands. Along with this, Palfrey also successfully
crossed the
Molokai channel, in Hawaii, and the Santa Barbara Channel, in
the United
States, as well as the Strait of Gibraltar, between Spain and
Morocco.
