Over 100 Thousand Participants at Nation-wide I.T. Forum
HAVANA, Cuba, June 25 (ACN)
More than 100 thousand people attended the two-day
nation-wide Information Technologies Festival hosted by 600
computer clubs
operating throughout the island.
The information
was released to Cuban Television by the director of the
computer club network, Raul Van Troi Navarro, who noted that
participants
mainly focused on web 2.0 tools and on social networks.
The Festival’s agenda also included the download of books,
Cuban music and
software program like antiviruses, in the computer clubs,
whose main task
is that of spreading knowledge on the use of information
technologies,
even in the most remote Cuban zones.
The event, which opened celebrations for the 25th
anniversary of the clubs
to be marked in September, also made available a USB version
of the Cuban
encyclopedia EcuRed, in an effort to fill the gap caused by
scarce
Internet connectivity in Cuba.
According to recent statistics released by the National
Statistics and
Information Office, the number of Internet users on the
island increased
by 45 percent in 2001, if compared to the previous year, to
reach a total
of 2 million 610 thousand.
