The new medical doctors are
part of 700 youths that originally traveled to
Cuba in 2005 for medicine scholarships, according to
Bolivia’s Opinion
on-line publication. The graduates returned to the city of
Cochabamba
this week, where they were welcomed by relatives, friends
and local
authorities.
The new professionals will offer their services in tune with
the
necessities and plans of the Bolivian government’s
healthcare program,
particularly in the consolidation of primary and secondary
medical
attention levels, said Health minister Juan Carlos
Calvimontes, cited by
the on-line publication.
Once graduated as medical doctors, they can return to Cuba
to take
different specialties, the minister noted. However, not all
think of
returning immediately to Cuba.
Graduate Edilson Brito de Beni expressed his willingness to
stay for a
six-month period of social work in Bolivia to assist the
population badly
needing medical assistance, with the support of the Bolivian
government.
Meanwhile, Oscar Rocha, the second in a family of six
siblings in southern
Cochabamba, said that thanks to the scholarship granted by
Cuba he became
a doctor and he owes his practical skills to his direct
contact with the
Cuban people.
