Cuba Denounces
Failure to Meet Non-Proliferation Treaty
HAVANA, Cuba,
June 20 (ACN) Cuban delegate in Geneva Yusnier Romero
Puentes denounced at a Disarmament Conference the failure to
meet the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
Puentes said that
over 40 years after the adoption of the treaty, there
are more than 20 000 nuclear weapons in the world, nearly 5
000 of which
are ready to be used, according to a note posted on the
Cuban Ministry’s
website.
The explosion of just a very small part of such a huge
arsenal, only 100
nuclear heads, would cause the nuclear winter, he said.
Nuclear powers must honor their compromises related to the
treaty and the
accords reached at Conferences on the issue, held in 2000
and 2010.
International security undoubtedly is being threatened by
nuclear weapons,
while their total elimination is a question of human
survival, Puentes
stressed.
The Cuban representative called on the immediate adoption of
a convention
on nuclear disarmament that states a deadline for the total
elimination of
such weapons.
Cuba will continue to restlessly work to attain this
objective, said the
Cuban delegate. |
