Shoulder to Shoulder with Social Movements at Rio+20
HAVANA, Cuba, June 19 (ACN)
Cuba shares with social movements the political agreement of
rejecting the so-called “Green Economy” and condemning
capitalism, the Cuban representative of the International
Networks at the Rio + 20 Politbureau, Llanisca Lugo, told
ACN.
Lugo made her statement via
Internet, from Rio de Janeiro, where the
Summit of the Peoples is running since last June 15 parallel
to the UN
Conference on Sustainable Development.
The Cuban representative said the struggle will continue to
demand the
transformation of the current development model and build
new emancipatory
platforms. The Cuban organizations consider this issue
linked to the
causes and consequences of a multiple domination system that
is
militarizing, occupying and intervening in other countries
to exploit
their natural resources in its own benefit.
Lugo said they are inspired in the speech given by Cuban
Revolution leader
Fidel Castro at the 1992 Earth Summit and in all the
reflections he has
written over the past years in which he has alerted of the
dangers pending
on humanity and the planet.
“We Cubans have chosen a path that is not perfect but which
offers
alternatives that must be taken into account,” she stressed.
In many ways, “we are taking sides with different Latin
American
organizations and we are committed to common agendas in
defense of women,
workers and different actors posing increasing resistance.”
According to the program of activities during the
Conference, the Cuban
chapter of the Network in Defense of Humanity will launch
the website “Una
especie en peligro” (An Endangered Species) on Tuesday, and
will also open
a photo exhibit titled “Rostros en Peligro” (Faces in
Danger).
On Wednesday, the network will also make available to
participants at the
Rio + 20 Conference the book “Nuestro deber es luchar” (Our
duty is to
Fight), which contains a dialog between Fidel Castro and
intellectuals
from around the world. A panel titled “ Common Position of
the Network in
Defense of Humanity” will be held on June 21 and it will
include the
documentary film “Images of the Future”, by renowned film
maker, already
departed, Santiago Alvarez, already departed.
