Domestic Production of Cocoa and Coffee Discussed in Havana
HAVANA, Cuba, June 12 (ACN)—Cuba’s
potential in increasing production and substituting coffee
and cocoa imports are being discussed at Havana´s
International Convention Center.
Specialists from
the Mountain Group from the Agriculture Ministry and the
Afro Forest Research Institute will offer the outcome of a
national coffee
program developed in the mountains and in low land areas
through urban
agriculture.
Marta Aurora Gonzalez, Executive Secretary of the First
International
Coffee and Cocoa Congress told ACN News Agency that workers
from
outstanding productive areas will present their experiences
during the event.
She added that the event which will run until the 14th will
include
quality, benefits and derivatives, participatory research,
local
innovation and agrarian extension, integrated combat of
plagues and
diseases, industry and agro productive and forest systems.
After a call of the country´s leadership to turn coffee into
an important
economic sector in the mountains, financing the production
was approved
with the objective of slowly increasing the output for the
next 5 years
starting from recovering the soil, seeding and
rehabilitation of the
plantations among other tasks.
A master conference is also programmed on the current
tendencies of the
international cocoa market.
