The group also wanted to commemorate Gerardo Hernandez´s birthday (June
4th) as well as Ramon Labañino´s who will celebrate his on June 9th and
whom are unable to join their families on their special day due to an
arbitrary detention and incarceration on September 12th, 1998.

Wednesday´s Juventud Rebelde daily quoted Yaritza Gonzalez Castro,
representative of the Young Communist League, UJC, in the eastern province
saying that on this Five for the Five campaign, they organized workshops,
conferences, concerts and exchanges with foreign students as well as
sports activities.

The team that hiked the highest point in Cuba was made up by the UJC
leadership, members of the High School Students Federation and the Jose
Marti Art Instructors Brigade.

Gerardo, Ramon, Antonio, Fernando and Rene, known as the Cuban Five, were
subjected to a biased trial in Miami and given unjust long prison terms
ranging from 15 years to 2 life sentences plus 15 years for having fought
terrorism.
