Cuban Youth Fight for the Release of the Cuban Five from
Turquino Peak
HAVANA, Cuba, June 6 (acn)
A group of 30 youngsters from the eastern province of Granma
hiked to Turquino Peak (highest elevation on the island) to
demand the release of the Cuban Five as part of the world
struggle in their favor.
The group also wanted to
commemorate Gerardo Hernandez´s birthday (June
4th) as well as Ramon Labañino´s who will celebrate his on
June 9th and
whom are unable to join their families on their special day
due to an
arbitrary detention and incarceration on September 12th,
1998.
Wednesday´s Juventud Rebelde daily quoted Yaritza Gonzalez
Castro,
representative of the Young Communist League, UJC, in the
eastern province
saying that on this Five for the Five campaign, they
organized workshops,
conferences, concerts and exchanges with foreign students as
well as
sports activities.
The team that hiked the highest point in Cuba was made up by
the UJC
leadership, members of the High School Students Federation
and the Jose
Marti Art Instructors Brigade.
Gerardo, Ramon, Antonio, Fernando and Rene, known as the
Cuban Five, were
subjected to a biased trial in Miami and given unjust long
prison terms
ranging from 15 years to 2 life sentences plus 15 years for
having fought
terrorism.
