According to Norge Marrero,
director of High Performance at the National Institute of
Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) there are
still some athletes with chances of participating in this Summer
Games:
the 4x400 relays in track and field, a diver, two swimmers and a
cyclist.
Marrero said those berths are granted depending on the world
ranking of
each sport.
Also, he said, the Cuban volleyball team (m) has a chance at the
Olympic
qualifier tournament in Germany, and two beach volleyball
couples (m and
f) that will try to make it at the North, Central America and
the
Caribbean tourney to be held in Mexico.
Track and field is the sport with more sportspeople qualified
with 33,
followed by wrestling (12), judo (9), boxing (8), rowing (6),
kayack (6),
cycling (4), sport shooting (4), weightlifting (4), taekwondo
(3), diving
(2), swimming (1), table tennis (1) and archery (1).
On the training the Cuban delegation has received, Marrero said
that “it
has been satisfactory, but, as you know, the Olympic Games are
the most
demanding sports event in the world”
He added that “all countries want to achieve great results, just
like us,
and our athletes are aware of that and are making great efforts
in that
regard”
