US Students Visit Cuba in Intercultural Exchange Program
HAVANA, Cuba, May 28 (AIN) A first group of students from
Woodbury University in
Los Angeles, USA, is in Cuba as part of an intercultural
communication program, sponsored by the José Martí Cultural
Society (SCJM).
Jeannette V Fischer (Cookie), a
professor from this university, who is the
promoter and coordinator of the project, explained to ACN news
agency the
interdisciplinary nature of the initiative because it includes
students of
several degrees such as social communication, architecture,
film, design
and even economy, which expands the range of the exchanges and
integrates
various fields.
She noted that because the practical and professional results of
this
first group she believes there will be many more to come,
considering that
even some of the youngsters here this time already expressed
their desire
to repeat the experience.
Fischer pointed out that this is a unique event, which involves
all
possible angles, in a synergy of topics such as art, society,
academic
knowledge and mutual spiritual growth.
The professor also explained that this trip was possible because
for years
she has known several people in the SCJM, who along with some US
groups
carried out works with a very strong passion and amazing
persistence.
She said that the first result of this exchange was the penning
of an
agreement with the International School of Film and Television
of San
Antonio de los Baños and their young students received lectures
from
prominent figures such as the Cuban photographer Roberto Salas.
They have also experienced direct contact with many people and
institutions in the streets of Havana.
For me it is very important that they learn there is another way
to
interconnect, because they come from a society with many
material
facilities and here they see how creativity emerges from the
encounter
with the community, something that we lack in our country, which
is much
more individualistic, she expressed .
The academic said she was excited about the invitation they
received from
actor Manuel Porto who has developed a successful and renowned
work in
community cultural promotion in a far-off place as the Cienaga
de Zapata
swamp.
