VP Attends Funerals of Tomas Borge
HAVANA, Cuba, May 3 (acn)
Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdes Menendez, vice
president of the Cuban Council of State and Ministers
attended the funerals of Nicaraguan Commander Tomas Borge,
who was a close friend of Cuba and strong supporter of its
Revolution.
Nicaragua’s President Daniel
Ortega presided over the ceremony held at the
Juan Pablo II Square, in Managua, where he praised the
merits of the only
surviving founder of the Sandinista National Liberation
Front (FSLN,
Spanish acronyms), and read condolences messages sent by
presidents of
several countries, including Cuba’s Raul Castro and
Venezuela’s Hugo
Chavez, and by leaders of religious, social and intellectual
organizations
from all over the world.
Granma newspaper reported that the Cuban Revolution leader
Fidel Castro
and President Raul Castro sent over two floral wreaths in
honor to the
Nicaraguan revolutionary, who was the Minister of Interior
of his country
from 1979 to 1990, and ambassador to Peru at the moment of
his death.
At the funerals, Ortega spoke as well of the close bonds
between the Cuban
and Sandinista revolutions while holding in his hands a book
by Borge
titled A corn, speaking with Fidel (Un grano de maíz,
conversando con
Fidel), which the author considers as “his bible.”
Ortega read a dedication written by Fidel to the FSLN leader
on August 13
of 1992, on both of them’s birthdays.
In fulfilling his will, Borge was buried next to the remains
of another
FSLN founder: Carlos Fonseca.
In Havana, the Embassy of Nicaragua opened a condolences
book that will be
available for signing Thursday and Friday.
