Cuban Province Redoubles Efforts to Palliate Climate Change
HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 17 (acn) Central Cuban province Cienfuegos redoubles efforts to fight climate change, and its experts presented the macro-project scenarios of danger and vulnerability from the rise of sea level for the years 2050 and 2100.

Neice Hernandez Garcia, PhD, head of the Provincial Group for the Study of
Hazards, Vulnerability and Risk in an interview with Granma newspaper said
she believes that that macro-project is the most comprehensive tool for
improvement of environmental and land use, from the scientific and
organizational points of view.

The research carried out by the Group provided new evidence, consistent
with previous assessments that the first areas to be damaged, in a
possible scenario of sea level rise would be the low areas of Cienfuegos
city, scientist Roberto Gomez Brito said.

Gomez explained that, according to the estimates also low areas of some
municipalities would be affected.

As a direct result of this study the Yaguanabo settlement, in the
municipality of Cumanayagua, was moved from the beach to higher ground,
with new and resistant to the onslaught of hurricanes buildings.

The mapping of vulnerabilities associated with hydro-meteorological
phenomena is just one of the several ways through which passes a
coordinated effort by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment,
following instructions issued by the Communist Party and the government,
which involves all Cuban agencies.
