Women
from 51 Countries March against War and in Solidarity with
Cuba in Brazil
HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 10 (acn)
Nearly 300 women from 51 countries marched on Tuesday in
Brasilia against war and the 50-year-old U.S. economic
blockade of Cuba and also for the immediate release of the
Cuban antiterrorists who remain unjustly held in the United
States since 1998.
The demonstrators, who are
participating in the Fifteenth Congress of the
Women’s International Democratic Federation (WIDF) in the
Brazilian
capital, condemned the repressive actions taken against
demonstrators in
European countries who are protesting against unpopular
anti-crisis measures.
Marchers also ratified their support of Argentina’s claim of
sovereignty
over the Malvinas (Falkland Islands) and condemned the U.S.
aggressions
against and occupation of nations around the world in recent
years.
On Tuesday, in a plenary session, delegates heard reports on
the
organization’s meetings of the regional offices for the
Americas, Asia,
Europe, the Arab nations, and Africa.
During the event, the Cuban Women’s Federation (FMC) was
re-elected as
coordinator of the Regional Office for the Americas, a post
it holds since
the creation of the WIDF’s regional groups in 1990.
Yolanda Ferrer, General Secretary of the FMC, said the
decision was
adopted by the representatives of the 31 organizations
associated to the
Regional Office for the Americas, who praised the work done
by the Cuban
organization.
