Daylight
Saving Time to Be Observed in Cuba as of April 1
HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 30 (acn)
Daylight saving time will be observed this year in Cuba at
midnight between Saturday, March 31st, and Sunday, April
1st, when the clocks will turn one hour ahead to 1am,
according to a note from the National Electric Union (UNE).
Daylight saving
time is used as a way to save energy by extending daylight,
therefore reducing the need to use artificial lighting.
The initiative was first implemented in Cuba in 1928 but it
was not widely
accepted until World War II. After the war, daylight saving
time was no
longer observed until 1965. In 2004, the Caribbean nation
remained on
daylight saving time until October 29, 2006. After two years
operating all
year-round without changing from “summer” to “normal” time,
Cuba decided
to re-establish standard time on October 29, 2006.
