Diaz, the designated hitter of the Metropolitanos team in the 17-squad
Cuban Baseball League, lined a sixth-inning single into center field off a
two-out delivery from Pinar del Rio’s right-hander Reinier Verano to tie
Pacheco’s record. It was not only the record-tying base-hit number 2,356,
but it was also the first of the afternoon allowed by Verano.

Diaz and Pacheco are followed in the list of Cuba’s top hitters by legends
such as Fernando Sanchez (2,215), Omar Linares (2,205), and Luis Ulacia
(2195).

The Top Ten is completed by Wilfredo Sanchez (2,174), Victor Mesa (2,171),
Lazaro Vargas (2,132), Victor Bejerano (2,126), and Javier Mendez (2101).

Enrique Diaz, the only active player of the hitters’ Top Ten, also holds
the Cuban League’s records for scored runs (1,622), triples (98), games
played (2,064), plate appearances (9,576), at-bats (7,910), and stolen
bases (724).
