National Conference on Permaculture Kicks off in Cuba
SANTI SPIRITUS, Cuba, Feb 27 (acn)
The II National Conference on Permaculture will run from
this Monday through Thursday to deal with the experiences,
new developments and techniques used in this agricultural
movement that aims at preserving the environment.
The primary
agenda of permaculture has been to assist people to become
more self reliant through the design and development of
productive and
sustainable gardens and farms, in areas where human beings
live and interact.
María Caridad Cruz, coordinator of the Local Sustainable
Development
Programme, told ACN news agency that over 100 people with
wide experience
on these methods will participate in the forum.
According to experts, permaculture, as a systematic method
was developed
by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren during the
1970s, was
introduced in Cuba in 1993, as a strategy to boost food
production at
household and community levels, in an ecological way.
Its use helps reducing energy consumption, the amount of
pollution in the
communities, while allowing farmers to use water properly,
to recover
depleted soils, to reforest and many other aspects that are
important for
the very survival of humankind
