European
Parliamentarians Oppose Common Position against Cuba
HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 27 (acn) The
members of the Confederal Group European United Left/Nordic
Green Left of the European Parliament (EP) demanded in
Strasbourg, France, the elimination of so-called Common
Position of the European Union on Cuba, which has been in
force since 1996.
The ‘Common Position,’ adopted
in 1996 at the request of then-Spanish
Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, limits and conditions the
European
Union’s relations with Cuba to the “improvement of the
respect to human
rights and freedom on the island.” This position is regarded
by Havana as
a violation of its sovereignty and an interference of Cuba’s
domestic affairs.
According to Prensa Latina news agency, during a meeting
with the Cuban
ambassador to Belgium and head of the Cuban diplomatic
mission before the
EP, Mirtha Hormilla, the president of the Group, Lothar
Bisky, expressed
their solidarity with Cuba and their support of the
Caribbean nation’s
struggle against Washington’s 50-year-old economic blockade.
He also
wished the Cuban people success in the ongoing process to
update the
country’s socialist economic model.
The members of the Confederal Group European United
Left/Nordic Green Left
also demanded the immediate release of Cuban antiterrorists
who remain
unjustly imprisoned in the United States.
