Candulia, like people call her
affectionately, said she feels well, between the kisses,
embraces, sweets, flowers and other presents she received
from relatives, neighbors, close friends and representatives
of local institutions.
In a fluid conversation with ACN, she was very happy, and
declared to be proud of her descendants and thankful for the
warm treatment given to her by residents in Santa Rosa and
people visiting her.
She said that, in recent years, Mexican, Spanish, French,
Japanese and Dominican persons have come to meet her,
something she never thought would happen.
As proof of her lucidity, she
expressed her condemnation to the war threats imposed on
today’s world, and asserted very clearly: “I want peace”.
Juana Bautista was born on February 2, 1885, in the hamlet
of Santa Rosa, in the
neighborhood of Ceiba Hueca Arriba, Granma province,
according to Volume I, Page 35, of the municipal Register of
Births, Marriages and Deaths, where she was registered on
February 27 of that year.
Her age was also scientifically demonstrated by way of a
biomedical and psychosocial study carried out in 2007 by a
multidisciplinary team of the Cuban Public Health Ministry
and the Iberian-American Center for the Third Age.
This long-lived woman of black race had 12 siblings, and
apparently inherited long life from her parents, since her
mother died a centenarian and her father at 96 years of age.
With clear voice, she speaks
slowly and complains of not being able to stand up, and
although her lack of vision prevents her from watching
television, she listens to programs like The Round Table and
the National Newscast.
