Thor Heyerdahl School-Sailer to Arrive in Cuba on Sunday
PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba, Jan 27 (acn)
Carrying 34 German students on board, the school-sailing
vessel Thor Heyerdahl will arrive in the westernmost Cuban
province of Pinar del Rio on Sunday, January 29, for its
tenth visit to the Caribbean nation.
After their arrival at the
pier of the Maria la Gorda beach in the
Guanahacabibes peninsula, the students will go in bicycles
to the nearby
town of Sandino and then they will continue their bicycle
ride to the city
of Pinar del Rio, where they will meet with pre-university
students.
According to the Havana-based Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP),
they will
visit the famous valley of Viñales and they will learn about
the
cultivation of tobacco with local farmers.
Traveling in buses and divided into groups, the students
will also visit
other provinces and will finally meet in the Cuban capital,
where they
will visit the ICAP venue and Old Havana.
On February 18, they will continue their journey aboard the
Thor Heyerdahl.
The three-mast topsail schooner Thor Heyerdahl has been
sailing as a
swimming educational institution for youths for more than 25
years. More
than 20,000 youths and young adults have undergone its
progressive
educational teaching program by now. It is named after the
eponymous
famous Norwegian explorer, known for his Kon-Tiki
expedition, in which he
sailed 4,300 miles (8,000 km) by raft from South America to
the Tuamotu
Islands.
The Thor Heyerdahl is considered a forerunner of the idea of
supporting
young individuals on board a traditional sailing vessel on
their way to
maturity and developing their personality, sense of
responsibility and
teamwork spirit.
