GUANTANAMO, Cuba, Jan 25 (acn)
Authorities from Cuban easternmost
Guantanamo province intensified their campaign to raise
awareness among
drivers, whose reckless driving led to an increase in
accidents last year.
Traffic Safety officers deliver lectures and discuss the
latest Road
Safety Code on regular basis with drivers at the main bus
stations, cargo
transportation entities and taxi companies.
They are also being stricter with drivers who violate the
law, and whose
reckless driving endangers lives on the roads.
Statistics show that during 2011 there were 309 road
accidents in this
province, where 92 people lost their lives and 412 were
injured and
material losses were significant as well.
The Police Department blamed the 56 more accidents resulting
in twofold
increase in the death toll onto crass violations of the Road
Code carried
out by drivers, as well as by pedestrians and bicycle
riders.
In statements to ACN news agency, policemen said that the
most common
violations are not respecting the rights of the other
drivers to pass
them, make unlawful turns and over speeding. Those three
reasons caused
over 90 percent of the amount of deaths.
As part of the strategies to help palliate this scourge, the
provincial TV
station Solvision broadcasted reports with statistics and
interviews, when
it stressed the dangers of reckless driving to society.
