Cuba
Slams U.S.'s Failure to Comply with WTO’s Dispositions
HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 21 (acn)
Cuba denounced before the WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body the United
States’ failure to recognize the international organization’s
decision regarding Section 211 of the U.S. Omnibus Appropriations
Act of 1998 which infringes Cuba’s intellectual property rights.

Prensa Latina
reported that the Cuban ambassador to the Geneva-based
international organizations, Rodolfo Reyes, said the U.S. has
the legal
obligation to derogate Section 211 as established within the
framework of
the WTO Dispute Settlement body.
Section 211 is part of measures supported by its economic,
commercial and
financial blockade against Cuba which Reyes described as
“unjust, illegal
and genocide.” It hinders foreign investment in the island
associated to
the commercialization of world-known Cuban products, while
allowing
Bacardi to illegal sale its rum under the Cuban trademark of
Havana Club.
The Cuban diplomat slammed the White House’s double standards as
it
assumes the right to judge other WTO members while repeatedly
refusing to
meet its obligations with the organization.
Cuba enjoyed the support of many delegations in the forum, among
them
those from Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Ecuador, Mexico,
Paraguay,
Uruguay and Venezuela.
