Cuba Reiterates Support of World Struggle against Illiteracy
HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 12 (acn) Cuba reiterated on Wednesday its
willingness to contribute, with its modest but proven
experience, to the world struggle against illiteracy in tune
with a call issued by the United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to increase
literacy rates by 50% by the year 2013.

Currently, there are nearly 800 million
illiterate people around the world and 38 million children
without access to elementary education, according to UNESCO,
which leads the United Nations Literacy Decade (UNLD) under the
slogan of “Literacy as Freedom”.
“In response to this call in favor of humanity, Cuba has once
again expressed its willingness to contribute,” said the Cuban
Minister of Education, Ena Elsa Velazquez.
In this regard, she highlighted the constant efforts made by
Cuban professionals to eradicate illiteracy in more than 28
countries all over the world, where they have attained excellent
results with the implementation of the Cuban literacy methods
‘Yo si puedo’ (Yes, I Can), and ‘Yo si puedo seguir’ (Yes, I Can
Continue).
The official added that Cuban pedagogues will continue to
increase the
quality of education in the Caribbean nation as well.
