Part of the 8th
International Congress on Higher Education, “University
2012”, the meeting of the organization’s general secretariat
will take place amid a regional environment of struggles for
public, free and quality education.
In an exclusive interview with ACN, Reinier Limonta,
president of the OCLAE, informed that representing the over
100 million students from about 20 nations will be
delegations from Colombia, Chile, the Dominican Republic,
Brazil, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Cuba.
Daniel Carbo Ordoñez, Ecuadorian member of the
organization’s executive secretariat, specified that the
world capitalist crisis and the launching of a campaign to
face the commercial exploitation of education will be among
the main topics under debate.
The OCLAE’s work agenda for 2012 will be approved during the
meeting of the general secretariat, which will include
active participation in academic, cultural and political
meetings in the region, and where efforts to achieve
regional unity and integration will be reaffirmed.
The organization was created on August 11, 1966, as a result
of an agreement reached at the 4th Latin American Students
Congress. By way of its almost 40 member organizations, the
OCLAE plays a significant role in the promotion of actions
for reforms and democratization of education, as well as for
the eradication of illiteracy.
Likewise, it champions the development of unity and
solidarity among students, and the achievement and defense
of their legitimate rights and demands, and struggles
against distorting foreign penetration into universities.
