Young Cuban Painter Finds Inspiration in Fidel Castro
MATANZAS, Cuba, Jan 6 (acn)
Plastic artist Jorge J. Gutierrez Salomon has dedicated his
upcoming exhibition titled “Continuidad de pensamiento”
(Continuity of Thinking) to Commander in Chief Fidel Castro;
the works will be shown in Holguin, the Cuban leader’s birth
province.
The exhibition of
large-sized paintings will be inaugurated on May 19, the
date marking the 117th anniversary of the death of Cuban
national hero
Jose Marti.
Salomon told ACN he found inspiration in Fidel Castro as he
represents a
historical process and the continuity of Marti’s thinking.
In order to express the true dimension of the person whom
the exhibition
is dedicated to, the young painter said he is employing a
wide variety of
colors and techniques such as printmaking, filling, and
watercolor wash.
Salomon, 23, was born in Holguin but has lived in Matanzas
since the age
of three. He said he is looking forward to returning to his
birthplace
where he has never been back to since he left and which is
also the place
of origin of the leader of the Cuban Revolution.
Some of the finished paintings show Fidel’s olive-green
silhouette and
symbolic elements such as the earth where life sprouts from
and white
doves symbolizing the peace.
According to Ivette Castellanos, from the provincial center
for Plastic
Arts, the exhibition’s curatorship will be made by art
critic Idania
Alvarez, who will also be in charge of writing the texts in
the catalogue.
Castellanos said Salomon’s display is likely to be taken to
different
galleries of the country.
