Philippine Diplomats
in Cuba Pay Tribute to Their National Hero Jose Rizal
HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 28 (acn)
Officials from the Philipines Embassy in Cuba jointly with the
Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP) paid tribute this Wednesday to
the National Hero of that Asian country, Jose Rizal, on the
occasion of the 115th anniversary of his death.
ICAP’s vice
president Alicia Corredera and the Philippine embassy's
business attaché Jason Anasarias placed floral wreaths at
the bust of Jose
Rizal at the Fraternity Park in Havana.
In statements to ACN, Anasarias compared their national hero
with Cuba’s
Jose Marti noting that both of them where the chief planners
of the
independence wars against Spanish colonialism late in the
19th century in
their respective countries.
Rizal, who was a doctor and a writer, is the author of
novels "El
filibusterismo" and "Noli me tangere" in which he openly
decries the
colonial regime.
Due to his independence ideals, Rizal was killed on December
30 of 1896.
The diplomat took advantage of the moment to comment on the
strengthening
ties between Cuba and his country noting that for the first
time this year
a Philippine film was screened at Havana’s International New
Latin
American Film Festival.
