Compay Segundo’s Music Still Loved Worldwide, says Son
HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 28 (acn) “My father’s songs are still among
the favourites of fans worldwide” say Salvador Repilado, son of
late singer Compay Segundo and director of the band his father
founded.
|
Repilado highlighted the success the band had in
a recent tour around
France and the expectations that precede its performance in the
Cuyas
theatre, in Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.
The band, named after Compay Segundo, whose real name was
Francisco
Repilado Muñoz (1907-2003), will give two concerts in the first
fortnight
of January in the Cuyas, a theatre with a capacity of 943
persons.
The concerts are part of an international homage to the
legendary author
of “Chan Chan”, a hit that made of Compay Segundo a household
name around
the world, on the occasion of his 105 birthday, his son told
Prensa Latina
news agency.
According to Repilado, the inhabitants of the Canarias have
shown great
respect to Compay after he released his “Virgen del Pino”, a
single that
honors the patron saint of the Terol region.
“That piece became such a hit that the Spanish musician and
producer
Santiago Auserón (Juan Perro) recorded it with Compay and later
was
included in his CDs “Duets” and “Antologia”, he said.
He added that the entire band was thrilled when they joined
their art with
the Rouen Opera Orchestra in two concerts to play Compay
Segundo’s
repertoire in a symphonic style, at the Rouen Theatre Des Arts.
The 1300 people that crowded the theater for two consecutives
nights
cheered the 12 songs we played, Repilado said.
“Compay was a prophet once more, this time in Normandy, with his
message
of peace that he carried with him around the world: a sound from
my guitar
is more worthy that one from a cannon”, he concluded.
