Cuban GM Fidel Corrales Won Carlos Torre Chess Memorial in Mexico
HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 21 (acn) Cuban Grand Master (GM) Fidel Corrales won the annual Carlos Torre Chess Memorial that concluded on Tuesday in Yucatan, Mexico.

In his last match, Corrales, currently the fourth best-ranked Cuban player
with 2,578 points of ELO rating, drew with Mexican GM Juan Carlos Gonzalez
and concluded the event with six victories —including one against
second-seeded GM Bartlomiej Macieja of Poland— and three ties.

Thus, he finished undefeated with 7.5 units of nine possible and became
the fifth Cuban player to win the annual tournament.

In addition, he added 18 units to his ELO rating, according to the
official website of the tournament.

The second spot of the competition was for also Cuban GM Yuri Gonzalez,
who accumulated 6.5 points.

The list of previous Cuban winners at the Carlos Torre Memorial includes
GMs Jesus Nogueiras (1997), Leinier Dominguez (2001), Yuniesky Quesada
(2003) and Lazaro Bruzon (2005).
