Nelson Dominguez’s Exhibit “Self-portrait” Attracts Crowds
Six locations in the
eastern Cuban province of Guantanamo: the Mariana Grajales
Revolution Square, the headquarters of the provincial Assembly
of the People’s Power, the Plastic Arts Council, and the
Salcines Palace, attract crowds as they are exhibiting more than
150 pieces that belong to a project called “Self-portrait”
carried out by 2009 National Plastic Arts
Award-winner Nelson Dominguez.
|
About 90 pieces
are also on display in the Eliseo Osorio Gallery and the
Cecilio Lambert House of Culture, in the municipality of
Baracoa, the
first Cuban village founded by the Spanish during the
colonization period.
This project, which includes Dominguez’s creations during
the last ten
years on topics such as family and nature, was inaugurated
early this
month, on the occasion of the 141st anniversary of the
appointment of
Guantanamo city as Village, on December 4, 1870.
The exhibit is rich in aesthetic value and diversity of
shapes, and in the
use of techniques like painting, sculpture, pottery, and in
many others.
His work shows some influence from classic masters as
Wilfredo Lam and
Pablo Picasso and at the same time it highlights his
authenticity and
personal style cleverly combining arts and usefulness in a
way that
ordinary objects gain in artistic aesthetics.
It is an explosion of creativity that invites in a
heterogeneous crowd of
adults and youths, whether connoisseurs in plastic arts or
not.
During the inauguration, Dominguez explained that the
exhibit is called
“Self-portrait”, though its pieces are nameless so that the
public can
spread the wings of their imagination to understand its
meaning.
He expressed his satisfaction for being able to share his
work with
contemporary peers and colleagues like creator Angel Laborde,
and noted on
his interest to get to know more the work of this artist
graduated in the
first promotion of the National Art School. He also said he
was eager to
exchange experiences and views with students and young
professionals of
arts, many of whom have been his apprentices.
“Self-portrait” was first exhibited at the Pabellon Cuba
exhibition hall,
in Havana, last April and then it traveled to Santiago de
Cuba province,
which turns Dominguez into the first artist to fill these
large spaces
with his work.
At the moment, Guantanamo province has become a third stage
for his
pieces, scattered in important places in the territory. The
exhibit will
be open for the public until the end of January, 2012.
This artist, born in Baire, in Santiago de Cuba , affirmed
that taking his
wok to the eastern region of the country is a moral
commitment for him as
he was born there.
Dominguez announced that soon the exhibit will be displayed
in Holguin and
commented on his intention to take it throughout Cuba .
He expressed his gratitude with all the people involved in
the project
from the beginning of the creation process for their
interest in assuring
safe transportation and assembling of the more than 150
pieces for the
amusement of the public.
