In the last day of the competition
on Sunday, Cuba downed Egypt 3-1
(26-24, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20) to finish the event with seven
victories and
four losses for a total of 20 points.
The event was won by Russia (29, 10-1), who were followed by
Poland (26,
8-3) and Brazil (24, 8-3).
These three squads also obtained their tickets for the
volleyball
tournament of the London Olympic Games in 2012.
Italy (24, 8-3) finished in the fourth spot ahead of Cuba, while
places
from sixth to twelfth were for the United States (16, 6-5),
Argentina (16,
5-6), Serbia (15, 5-6), Iran (12, 5-6), Japan (8, 2-9), China
(5, 1-10)
and Egypt (3, 1-10).
As to the individual leaders of the contest, Cuban Fernando
Hernandez was
the Top Scorer with 225 points, closely followed by Italian
Michal Lasko
(222). The other awards were for Egypt’s Ahmed Abdelhay (Best
Spiker),
Polish Marcin Mozdzonek (Best Blocker), Italian Cristian Savani
(Best
Server), Argentinean Luciano De Cecco (Best Setter), Brazilian
Sergio
Santos (Best Receiver) and Chinese Ren Qi (Best Libero). The
tournament’s
MVP was Maxim Mikhaylov of Russia.
