What Happened to Uncle Sam´s Envoys?

On the dawn of April 19th, 1961,  48 hours after the mercenary invasion began at the Bay of Pigs, organized from the United States against Cuba, the theater of operations was very different from that reported in the US and international media outlets.

Ángel Rodríguez Álvarez

What had happened to the forces send by Uncle Sam, whom according to the previous day´s news reports was on their way to Havana after taking control of four of the six Cuban provinces at the time? After intense combats at 11 am of that same day, Cuban forces recovered San Blas, an important access to the area under mercenary control.

Commander in Chief Fidel Castro present in the area organized the definitive assault on Playa Giron which was the last position of the aggressors.

The leader of the Revolution ordered an advance of the troops and explained on the need of reaching the target before nightfall.  At that point 122 millimeter cannons and 120 mortars damaged the imperialist backed mercenary forces.

By the information obtained, it was known of the existence of a barrier of enemy anti tank pieces on its way to the beach while the head of the armored vehicles were ordered to defeat and overcome that obstacle and advance towards the water.

The final chapter of the bloody episode thought out 13 months prior to the invasion was beginning –March of 1960- and organized and executed from the offices of the White House, Pentagon and the CIA.

At that time, Cuban casualties surpassed 100 and adding to that figure was the death and wounded among the population of the Zapata Swamp, victims of the enemy aviation.

As was documented then and years later admitted by high ranking US officials, numerous US forces and air and naval means were directly and indirectly taking part in the combat actions.

US Air Force pilots had bombarded the population areas like Pálpite and a group of civilians being evacuated killing women, children and senior citizens.

The aircrafts were disguised with the colors and insignias of the Revolutionary Armed Forces in clear violation of Article 39 of the Geneva Protocol of August 12th, 1949.

The land offensive of the revolutionary forces was detained but only to facilitate the air attacks over Giron, which was planned at 230pm.

The rest of the Brigada 2506 members attempted to desperately retrieve but upon them was intense fire from all available means.

At 530pm Playa Giron was liberated and thus ending, 64 hours later Operation Pluto, the conclusion of a stage of terrorist plans executed by the US against Cuba.

This time the imperial blow caused the Cuban people; among combatants and civilians the death of 176 of its sons and daughters and 300 wounded of
them 50 handicapped for life.

But the victory, characterized by the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro as the first military defeat of the US in Latin America, destroyed several myths and demonstrated that the unity of a nation, full of political consciousness, firm values and consequent revolutionary leadership can overcome the US Empire.
