HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 21 (acn) Cuban taekwondo experts Robelis Despaigne (80 kg), Nidia Muñoz (57 kg) and Glenhis Hernandez (67 kg) secured tickets to the London 2012 Olympic Games during a regional Olympic qualifier held over the weekend in the Mexican city of Queretaro.

Despaigne, gold medalist at the recently concluded Pan American Games in
Guadalajara, Mexico, took the title in his division with consecutive
victories over Haitian Tudor Sanon, Venezuelan Juan Diaz, and Canadian
Francois Coulombe.

Meanwhile, Muñoz —who did not made the podium in Guadalajara— won the
crown in the women’s 57-kilo division defeating Venezuelan Adanys Cordero,
Colombian Doris Patino, American Diana Lopez, and Chilean Yeny Contreras,
in that order.

Finally, Hernandez finished with the bronze medal of her division but it
was enough to secure a spot in the London Olympics. She beat Puerto Rican
Nikki Martinez in her first bout, but then lost to Brazilian Natalia
Silva, who would later take the gold medal. In the third-place bout, the
Cuban representative downed Dominican Deysy Montes de Oca.
