The movement seemed weak and isolated when it
began with only some 200
people in Zucotti Park but soon gained momentum and support
by the
majority of New Yorkers, union leaders, intellectuals,
artists and small
and medium size business people.
In less than two days the protests have extended to over 100
cities and
the agenda of the national political debates have changed.
Taboo issues
like inequality, domination of the society by the large
corporations,
capitalist greed and the empire´s crimes are now being
discussed in many
homes and editorial pages.
Why did the movement emerge, so much feared by the powerful
north which
has not stopped from repressing the protestors by dislodging
them from
Wall Street?
The United States is now going through the largest economic
crisis ever as
a consequence of capitalist greed, the government of money
and constant
wars. Unemployment has already reached 25 million, among
them many young
people. The nation with the most accumulated riches has 50
million people
living in poverty level, a large number without health
insurance and
public schools are in ruins. Millions have lost their homes
and their
lives heritage.
Meanwhile, according to official statistics, the richness of
the most rich
has increased 275 percent.
But there is also a crisis of values that makes the people
believe less
and less in their politicians and institutions. The people
believe they
are not represented by the large corporations and banks that
pay the
politicians’ political campaigns like for example, President
Barack Obama,
executive branch of government or the members of both Houses
of Congress.
Congress has never had such a low acceptance rate among the
public opinion
as today. Those designed to control the world are in crisis
and the cycle
of imperial wars cannot be sustained any longer.
We must add the threat of a nuclear holocaust against
humanity if the
mediocre governments and opportunists of the White House and
its allied
capital continue in insisting in their plan to attack Iran.
We can also add issues like global warming that cause famine
and is
rapidly ending with a number of important ecosystems for the
survival of
humanity. This cannot continue and we must radically change
this policy.
These changes must be made by the people and not the capital
or
politicians. This and more is demanded by the occupy
demonstrators.
Facing repression which surely continue and Occupy Wall
Street has wisely
responded: “You cannot dislodge an idea whose historic
moment is here to
stay”.
