Havana
Celebrates its 492nd Anniversary
HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 16 (acn) Havana celebrates its 492nd
anniversary on November 16 and for that reason hundreds of
people in Havana set out on a pilgrimage, on Tuesday, from the
City Museum to the Templete (shrine), in the Arms Square, to go
three times around a Ceiba tree under which the first mass was
performed.
|
Once there, the city historian, Eusebio Leal
Spengler, spoke of the
foundation of this village, initially named Villa de San
Cristobal de la
Havana, almost five centuries ago, in 1519.
According to the Granma newspaper, Leal noted on how historic
events from
the setting on fire of the village by French pirates and
corsairs to the
triumph of the Cuban Revolution, on January 1, 1959, were the
result of
actions by many generations.
The city historian praised the work of all those somehow
involved in
restoration programs in Old Havana, the historic part of the
city, for
almost half a century.
He said that Havana will hold dear its faith in the future and
that’s why
today the people walk to that Ceiba tree to pray for blessings
for this
city, on the verge of becoming 500 years old.
