The ceremony began with Mexico’s
national anthem, interpreted by Diana Ilan. Then, the 24
participating countries’ delegations (among them that of Cuba,
composed of 72 people) marched in, followed by the song “Sigue
tus sueños” (Follow your dreams), by Eugenia Leon.
Welcoming speeches were delivered by Imelda Guzman, president of
the Organizing Committee, and Octavio Londoño, president of the
Paralympic Committee of the Americas, while Bernardo de la
Garza, director general of Mexico’s National Sports Commission,
declared the event officially opened.
Juan Ignacio Reyes (athletics) and Juan Magallanes (basketball
on wheelchair) made the oaths, on behalf of judges and athletes.
A cultural moment was in charge of mariachi musicians, dancers
and acrobats, accompanied by typical Mexican songs like
“Guadalajara”, “El son de la negra” and “Jarabe tapatio”.
Next, the Parapan American torch made its entrance, which was
carried by several athletes until Maria de los Angeles Ortiz lit
the flame, after which beautiful fireworks were enjoyed by
participants and the public.
The musical segment began with the group Radiad, with its
combination of rock and Indian rhythms, followed by Jot Dog, a
pop band nominated to the Grammies, and famous singer Yuri, who
performed several pieces, like “Que te pasa” and “El apagon”.
The inaugural ceremony was closed
by Peruvian Gian Marco, who interpreted one of his songs,
entitled “El mismo sol” (The same sun).
Several competitions in various sports have been scheduled for
Sunday.
