The ceremony began with Mexico’s national anthem, interpreted by Diana Ilan. Then, the 24 participating countries’ delegations (among them that of Cuba, composed of 72 people) marched in, followed by the song “Sigue tus sueños” (Follow your dreams), by Eugenia Leon.

Welcoming speeches were delivered by Imelda Guzman, president of the Organizing Committee, and Octavio Londoño, president of the Paralympic Committee of the Americas, while Bernardo de la Garza, director general of Mexico’s National Sports Commission, declared the event officially opened.

Juan Ignacio Reyes (athletics) and Juan Magallanes (basketball on wheelchair) made the oaths, on behalf of judges and athletes.

A cultural moment was in charge of mariachi musicians, dancers and acrobats, accompanied by typical Mexican songs like “Guadalajara”, “El son de la negra” and “Jarabe tapatio”.

Next, the Parapan American torch made its entrance, which was carried by several athletes until Maria de los Angeles Ortiz lit the flame, after which beautiful fireworks were enjoyed by participants and the public.

The musical segment began with the group Radiad, with its combination of rock and Indian rhythms, followed by Jot Dog, a pop band nominated to the Grammies, and famous singer Yuri, who performed several pieces, like “Que te pasa” and “El apagon”.

The inaugural ceremony was closed by Peruvian Gian Marco, who interpreted one of his songs, entitled “El mismo sol” (The same sun).
