Latin America: Under the Eye of the US

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez recently called on the leaders of the region´s progressive governments to take extra precaution before the reiterated interests of the US to organize assassination plans as one of its favorite instruments to oust alleged rivals.

Néstor Núñez

He recently referred to the assassination of Libyan leader Muamar El
Ghadafi at the hands of the so called rebels and mercenaries at the
services of the western powers made up by NATO.

The Venezuelan head of state recalled that the US intelligence services
have assassinated a number of progressive political leaders in the past in
every corner of the planet in different times of history.

In Latin America alone, there was the assassination of Nicaraguan leader
Augusto Cesar Sandino; the coup in Chile that ended the life of Salvador
Allende; and that of legendary guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara.

There is the countless number of assassination attempts against the leader
of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro; terrorist plans to kill Bolivian
President Evo Morales; the unsuccessful coup in Ecuador against Rafael
Correa and also the Venezuelan Head of State.

This information is not a secret to anyone. In fact, official US orders
revealed to the public have sustained in different moments in history the
use of extreme violence against different “foreign leaders” as part of the
US foreign policy.

Such orders are carried out in different ways. Either through US military
forces; use of an ally; with the assistance of what is called today
“private security agencies” (mercenaries), or through assassination plots
at the service of so called anti terrorists in the world.

Recent information, amidst the euphoria of the violent change of Libyan
authorities, certain US legislators have begun to pressure in order for
Congress not to discuss assassinations against foreign heads of states but
rather to speak about it openly as though they were talking about
remodeling an office or signing a check.
