Rican Duo Calle 13 Sweep Latin Grammy Awards
HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 11 (acn) Puerto Rican duo Calle 13 made
history on Thursday winning a record nine awards —including
Album of the Year with ‘Entren los que quieran’— during the 12th
Latin Grammy ceremony held at the Mandalay Bay center/resort in
Las Vegas, Nevada.

The duo, formed by Rene “Residente” Perez Joglar
and his brother Eduardo
Jose “Visitante” Cabra Martinez, has won 19 Latin Grammys over
the years,
also a record previously held by Colombian Juanes, with 17.
Calle 13, nominated on this occasion for 10 awards, opened up
the gala
performing their hit “Latinoamerica” with the Venezuelan opera,
Orquesta
Juvenil Simon Bolivar, directed by Gran Maestro Dudamel. Later
on, they
won the Latin Grammy for “Latinoamerica” in the Song of the Year
category.
“Residente,” who sported a T-shirt with a revolutionary fist in
the
middle, dedicated his awards to “the education fight in Latin
America,”
and to “the people who make real music.” “Free education for
all! Long
live the education fight in Colombia, Chile, Dominican Republic,
Puerto
Rico,” he said and continued “Long live the music! Long live
Latin America!”
Colombian musician and education activist Shakira won the Latin
Grammy for
“Best Feminine Pop Vocal Album” and she was honored again for
her
philanthropic contributions to global education reform.
Other winners included Venezuelan Franco de Vita (Best Male
Vocal Pop
Album), Puerto Rican Sie7e (New Artist), the Mexican band Mana
(Rock album
by a duo or group with vocal) and a posthumous award to Mercedes
Sosa for
Deja La Vida Vola: En Gira, (Folk album).
