Made up mostly of
health professionals who traveled to Cuba for the first time,
the group met with printmaking professors who teach plastic art
lessons to people with Down syndrome.
The professors explained how through painting, music and dance,
young and
adult with the condition can develop skills that facilitate
their involvement in society.
Ana Elizabeth Martínez Chang, of the Cuban Friendship Institute,
ICAP, told the press the visit of the U.S. group was organized
by the New York Center of Cuban Studies and that among travelers
are doctors, psychologists and social workers.
The specialists received broad information about healthcare in
the central
province of Cienfuegos.
Phill Wolfson, the doctor leading the group of U.S. specialists,
praised how Cuba provides free access to medical services to all
the people, while regretting that it is not the same in his
country.
The tour of Cienfuegos included a visit to a maternity home and
a day-care
center for the elderly. The U.S. visitors also had the
opportunity with members of La Juanita community, with whom they
talk about education and prevention as part of the health
system.
