According to a press release from the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC),
the movie, which is scheduled to be screened again on Friday at
the SFU Harbour Centre, had its premiere at the Pacific
Cinematheque, where Lester Hamlet answered questions from the
audience.
Produced by ICAIC and also exhibited in similar film festivals
in Chicago and New York, ‘Casa Vieja’ is based on a homonymous
play by Cuban playwright Abelardo Estorino and it has actors
Yadier Fernandez, Daisy Quintana, Adria Santana, Alberto Pujol,
Susana Tejera and Isabel Santos in the leading roles.
The film, which is competing for the Youth Jury Award, received
the People’s Award during the 32nd Havana’s International
Festival of New Latin American Cinema last year and it was also
granted a Mention by the jury in the Fiction category.
The annual VLAFF was first held in 2003 and it aims at promoting
Latin American cinema in Vancouver as a means to facilitate
dialogue among different cultures and to explore historic and
social issues through cinema.
