Out of all nine entities producing high-quality genetic
material, the only one that has not benefited from the
project yet is the Argentina enterprise, where investments
are planned to be carried out next year, according to Lazaro
Gonzalez-Elias, irrigation specialist of the local Sugar
Entrepreneurial Group (GEA) local.
In 2007, the Ministry of Sugar resumed works to refurbish
irrigation and draining systems in some sugar cane fields,
while in others started building new ones, particularly in
seed fields, as the first step towards boosting agricultural
yield.
Face-lifts are also expected to be performed in fields to be
used for seed production in cooperative units and farms.
GEA sugar cane specialist Ifrain Otero told the local media
recently that the most important thing for the upcoming
sugar cane harvest was to produce the seeds in the same
areas where the sowing will be made.
Meeting the seed demand guarantees, in theory, 30 percent of
the expected yield for a plantation. Camagüey has potential
to produce 3, 7 million tons of sugar cane.
Otero said the investment program should be brought to
completion in two years.
