This
is the most complete edition of works by this poet, who was
among the leaders who initiated the island’s pro-independence
wars, directed the first newspaper of these insurgent forces,
and composed Guatemala’s National Anthem.
Sergio Garces, president of the office of the Association of
Historians of Cuba in eastern Granma province, specified that
the compilation includes 25 epistles and a biographical sketch
of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, who began that battle against
colonial rule and slavery.
He
highlighted that Palma had profound friendship bonds with two of
the best poets of all time, his compatriot Jose Marti and
Nicaraguan Rubén Dario.
The
book, with selection and introductory note by Bayamo historian
Ludin Fonseca, was printed by the Letras Cubanas publishing
house and was presented as part of activities organized to pay
tribute to the bard on the occasion of the centennial of his
death (Guatemala, August 2, 1911).
