Cuban Province Promotes Creation of Certified Coffee Seedbanks
SANTA CLARA, Cuba, Jul 6 (acn) Cuban professionals from the
Experimental Coffee Station (EEC), in the central province of
Villa Clara, are promoting the creation of certified coffee seed
banks, as part of a program for the recovery of this crop.
|
Expert Jose Angel Lacerra Espino told ACN that this province
has created four centers to reproduce the seeds obtained in
this institution and explained that these centers multiply
those of traditional varieties, which were previously
rejuvenated and improved.
Lacerra noted that one of the most significant deficiencies
in the production of coffee in Cuba is the use of low
quality seeds, which brings about low yielding and
difficulties in the development of the fruits and less
productivity per plant.
He explained that the genetic pattern of the crops have
decreased their potential because of the inappropriate care
of coffee plantations, deficiencies in the nutrition of the
soil, and difficulties in the selection and benefit of
coffee beans, among other reasons.
The expert pointed out that the reproduction of strains in
the newly ounded seed banks accounts for a systematic
assessment and severe phytosanitary control to guarantee its
propagation without losing qualities.
He mentioned that these centers will supply high-quality
seeds to coffee growers in the province, who must reproduce
and maintain seedlings in the existing nurseries in each
farm.
Experienced coffee grower Manuel Gonzalez Betancourt, who
runs one of the certified seed banks in Villa Clara,
affirmed that this implementation is vital for agricultural
production and determines the yielding of the crops in a
high percentage.
Gonzalez, who has been linked for more than 15 years to the
scientific programs of the EEC, grows six certified coffee
varieties in one hectare, in accordance with technical norms
established so as to avoid damaging their potential.
