Cuba to
Face Brazil in Opening Day of FIVB World League Finals
HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 4 (acn) The Cuban national
men’s volleyball team will face defending champions and world No 1
Brazil on Wednesday in the opening day of competitions of the Final
Round of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World League
Finals in Gdansk, Poland.
|
In a controversial decision by the organizers of the event, Cuba
—the 2010 world silver medallists— and Brazil were included in
Pool F along with world No 2 Russia and Olympic champions United
States, thus leaving host Poland, Argentina, Italy and Bulgaria
in Pool E.
Starting Wednesday, each pool will play round-robin before the
top two sides from each group advance to Saturday’s semifinals
with the finals to be played Sunday.
It is only the second time that eight teams have been involved
in the World League Finals —the only other time was in 2003 in
Madrid, Spain where Brazil won one of their record nine titles.
In the other matches on Wednesday, Russia takes on the United
States, Italy goes against Argentina and Poland hosts Bulgaria.
Cuba will face Russia on Thursday and the United States on
Friday.
