Int'l Caribbean Festival Begins in Cuba
SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Jul 4 (acn) The 31st International
Caribbean Festival, or Festival of Fire, began Sunday in the
eastern Cuban city of Santiago de Cuba with a performance at the
Heredia Theater.

The Caribbean fiesta will take over 30 venues
scattered all over the city with a program that includes dance
performances and concerts by Cuban and foreign groups, among
other activities.
About 800 artists from 25 other countries will come together
from July 3-9 for the Festival.
A report by Prensa Latina says one of the first activities in
the program is a workshop on popular religions beginning on
Sunday. The event will feature the choir "Voces del Milagro"
(Voices of Miracle), from the town of El Cobre, "Cordoneros de
Orile," and a celebration honoring Oshun, a deity of the
Cuban-African religion.
The international colloquium "El Caribe que nos Une" (The
Caribbean which unites us), and the Jesus Coss Causse Conference
of Poets from the Caribbean and the World starts Monday, while
diverse Caribbean visual art exhibitions are available in
different galleries of the city.
Story telling, natural medicine, fiestas in rural Cuba and
Haiti, jams with steel bands from Cuba and other islands, a
tribute to slave rebellion and rumba dancing sessions are all
included in the festival.
This year’s event is dedicated to the people and culture of
Trinidad and Tobago, which sent an official artistic delegation
of 77 members.
