Cuban Barrios Shots
for Gold in Switzerland
HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 30 (acn) Cuban discos thrower
Yarelis Barrios, second place in Beijing 2008 and Berlin 2009, won
with a 64.29 meter shot the Diamond League’s Lausanne meeting today.

After the first round Barrios was second with a 62.55 shot, but
in the next attempt she jumped to the lead with her winning shot
to leave Aretha Thurmand (USA-63.85) and Nadine Muller
(GER-63.58) with the silver and bronze medals respectively.
According to the event´s official website, the standings were
completed by Stephanie Brown (USA-61.94 metros), Kataeryna
Karsak (UKR-60.99), Nicole Grasu (ROU-60.54), Mélina Robert-Michon
(FRA-59.37) and Yarisley Collado (CUB-58.88).
Now Barrios accumulates 6 points in the race for the Diamond
League finals, trailing Croatian Sandra Perkovic with 8,
resulting from her victories in the Shanghai and Rome meetings.
She will also participate in the Athletics World Championship in
the South Korean city of Daegu in September and the next month
in Pan American Games scheduled for Guadalajara, Mexico.
Also this Thursday other Cuban representatives will compete in
Lausanne: Olympic champion 110 meter hurdler Dayron Robles,
triple jumpers Alexis Copello and David Giralt and Javelin
thrower Guillermo Martínez.
