South-South Cooperation: Facts Speak for Themselves
The Ibero American
General Secretary based in Asuncion, Paraguay, has just informed
that Venezuela and Cuba heads the list with over 16 percent of
projects underway regarding South-South cooperation in that
geographic region. It could not be any other way.
Cuba, a country that is suffering a cruel economic blockade
imposed by the United States, has strengthened its ties with
Third World nations and not only as an alternative to US
pressures and economic war against the island but also due to
the principles of solidarity that Cuba shares with its brothers
and sisters mainly in health care and education.
We cannot forget Cuba´s ideas in South-South cooperation, which
sustains the need that all underdeveloped country must attempt
through its efforts and mutual exchanges confront at least its
most important challenges in the economic and social spheres.
Havana was the site of the first South-South cooperation summit
and on that occasion the island´s delegation went to the event
with over 100 projects destined at establishing strong and
viable ties among those present constituting an important
contribution to the principles of the
memorable conference.
It is only fair to continue demanding the historical exploiters
of the Third World its support in solving the disasters they
themselves caused, but we must also think that the poorer
nations can fight and achieve advances from their own efforts.
There are currently thousands of Cuban doctors, teachers and
specialists in practically all sectors that have and are aiding
a number of nations and in recent years their Venezuelan
counterparts have joined in the efforts headed by President Hugo
Chavez cooperating in favor of justice and solidarity.
We cannot forget, looking back at the statement made by the
Ibero American General Secretary that Cuba and Venezuela are
founders of the Bolivarian Alliance of Our People´s of Our
America, ALBA, enriched by the incorporation of other regional
countries based on equity and sisterhood working together in
favor of economic and social advances in this part of
the world.
Venezuela founded PetroCaribe, which supplies oil in favorable
conditions in a region with low economic resources and offers
funds to projects like food security, health and education.
And we must also mention Cuba-Venezuela bilateral cooperation
which goes beyond numbers and percentages.
