Stem Cells: Beneficial to Athletes
The application of stem cells treatments aimed
at the rapid recovery of people has revolutionized medical
science and the possibility of using the method to relieve
injuries athletes suffered.
The Deputy Director of Research of the Hematology and Immunology
Institute, Dr. Porfirio Hernandez told ACN News Agency that a
clinical test demonstrated its possibilities and will constitute
an efficient weapon in the sports field in Cuba after carrying
out the first cases.
“This new treatment will be very valuable for bone fractures and
muscle, ligament and tendon ailments”, he stressed.
The Dr. added that “for the moment this procedure, which is not
surgical, has had good results and the patients have shown quick
recoveries.”
However, the procedure is very young in the medical sciences,
biological and research spectrum and “a long way is still needed
to completely learn about its regenerating capacity”, he pointed
out.
The truth is that the athletes, due to their intense training
and competition suffer a number of injuries in which the
majority of the cases there have been good results, while in
others provokes an early retirement making this method an option
in improving their health.
The stem cells can be obtained from the bone marrow or
peripheral blood starting from determined stimulates or those
that have the possibility of self renovating through mitosis
divisions that is to say by itself.
They can produce cells of one or more mature tissues, functional
or differentiated according to the potential level.
The majority of an adult’s individual tissue has a specific self
stem cell population allowing its periodical renovation or
regeneration when there is a specific damage.
There are different types and the one mostly used are the embryo
and adults, this last has the advantage of avoiding the bodies’
rejection because the patient is its own donor.
