HAVANA, Cuba, May 18 (acn) Grenada’s Prime Minister counselor
Gerry Hopkin, met with Cuban ambassador to his country, Angel
Reigosa, in Saint George to speak about the current situation of
the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters imprisoned in the United
States.
|
Reigosa gave Hopkin a few documentary films and printed
materials about the case to hand them over to Prime Minister
Tillman Thomas, says a press release on the Cuban Foreign
Ministry’s website www.cubaminrex.cu.
The five Cubans Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio
Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino, known as the
Cuban Five, were arrested in 1998 and sentenced -in 2001 in
Miami- to outrageous terms ranging from15 years in jail to
double life terms plus 15 years.
The Cuban Five were monitoring terrorist anti-Cuba groups
based in Florida, which enjoy Washington’s protection.
Regarding relations Cuba and Grenada, Hopkin thanked Cuba’s
assistance to his country in several fields of social and
economic development and reiterated his government’s stance
against the US economic, commercial and financial blockade
against Cuba.
Prior to the meeting, Cuban specialists participating in
collaboration programs in Grenada dedicated a Scientific
Forum to the Cuban Five.
The event was attended by Reigosa, Henry Thomson, chief
doctor of Grenada’s Health Ministry; Kester Draga, director
of the General de Saint George Hospital, and Clara Garcia,
head of the Cuban Medical Brigade, in addition to health
specialists from Grenada.
In the forum, Dr. Garcia read a review of the Cuban Five’s
case and encouraged those attending the meeting to step up
action in favor of their release and to send messages to US
president Barack Obama asking him to set them free.
